The Grand Rapids Press Building at 155 Monroe NW was demolished in 2015 to make way for the Grand Rapids Biomedical Research Facility for the MSU College of Human Medicine being completed on the same site.  

This early photo shows the beautiful modern design that truly evoked both a strong positive and negative response from Grand Rapidians.   The 173,840 s.f. Grand Rapids Press Building, designed by Daverman Associates and completed in 1966, was part of the massive urban renewal project in the central downtown area.  In 2015  it went down without much fanfare.

The 1966 Grand Rapids Press building on Michigan shown above actually replaced an earlier Grand Rapids Press building on Fulton Street shown at left.  It was subsequently torn down in 1968 after the move to the new building.   The 1906 building, was a classic beaux arts design by the famous architect Albert Kahn of Detroit. Local architects were Williamson & Crow. The 1906 Press building was located right next door to the Grand Rapids Herald building, another classic design.  It was such a different time in the history of newspapers in Grand Rapids.  As a researcher I rely heavily on the information I am able to find, especially in the old articles in the Grand Rapids Herald, a newspaper that made it a mission to promote, Grand Rapids as a "city beautiful" by sharing photos and details of all of the new buildings and renovations being completed in the city.  I will share a photo of the Herald building when I find a good one.  

Today the Grand Rapids Press is produced in Walker and editorial and marketing staff work from an office on Monroe.
